A naive obsession toward the recognistion and understanding of an abstract concept; or at least what it could mean in the future... Has lead me, as a student, down a more riddeling path. (The journey)
Allowing more time and thought to exploiting the term interiority - the venture started off as a treasure hunt. One article (a clue) leading one theory into another. A different example, perhaps; but the underlying notion seemingly identical to the one before.
A pattern soon formed - dimming my newly found enthusiasm with the writing constricting itself only to theory, an unclear hypothesis, an assumption; a dupliction or cross referral from one source to another; or scenarios pure explanatory facts of an 'experience'...
What made matters worse, was that within each article - the author would reach a point, where they throw ALL of their feathers out of a basket : Utilising humongous scientific words - to describe an intangible concept - BAM!!!! Completely irrelevant and thought jumping. Then back to rational thought, stating ' so that is why the space carries meaning...' within the conclusion. A supervicial, undetailed disclosure of a complex topic - the writers weren't willing enough to exploit the term to the bone, as to ensure the full understanding from their academic perspective.
It is upsetting that there was a lack of identity within these theory documents - as to not only be a historian, reciting the previously listed or mentioned examples - but to go a step further. Why could they not entice the reader with interesting concepts as to how to apply this theory to our current context? Or how to not only TALK about interiority - but influence and apply it. Inspiring inhabitants to become observers of storytelling - and in turn live more meaningful and productive lives?
These writings, had me disappointed due to the limited variety of perspectives and their respective explanations - until I read Anatomy of space : Understanding interiority for user's well-being (2014) from Paramita Atmodiwirjo. This was only the introductory article of a thesis consisting of numerous professionals dissecting a new perspective regarding interiority within the interior - being honest with their findings:
" Current thoughts on interiority as the core of interior architecture
has not been fully addresses in practice and pedagogy"
" The idea of interiority was challenged in terms of the extent
to which the cutting of buildings might alter and intervene
with the form, experience and perception"
Then again - the other mind changing article Knowledge & the Self : Charles Taylor's Sources of the Self - Chpt 1, reconsidered the term interiority within the context of mindfulness. Bluntly said - who YOU are as a person and all the fluff,(and not so fluff) all jumbled up to become your true self. All it took was one question. A different perspective to inspire something further within.
Refer to your own mind.
Your inner self.
The true you - and what he/she believes in.
" My identity is defined by the commitments and identifications
which provide the frame or horizon
within which I can try to determine from case to case what is good, or valuable,
or what ought to be done, or what I endorse or oppose.
In other words, it is the horizon within which
I am capable of taking a stand."
What I am willing to talk about and share, is not going to be easy concepts to follow - but trust that I will do my utmost best to break them all down into understandable terms. DO NOT mislead yourself - there will be reading involved, and some harrowing self reading practice is always suggested.
Rewrite it, research it, re-enterpret it, and retell the story with new insight from lessons learnt; and re-invent the life you want to live.
It became evident, interiority has different meanings depending on which context you use to use it in. At this point in time, it is evident that It can either refer to the interior inhabitable space (usually within an enclosure;) or it can refer to your inner most precious being (some refer to as soul) which indirectly influences your experiences, and way of meaning-making without consciously considering anything.
Would you consider the hypothesis, that depending on your (past) experiences, social connotations, morals, standards, and emotional sensitivity , your observation within a space will be influenced by them?
I am delving into complex theories here. And more thoughts will be shared in sections.
The excitement is stronger than ever - with content possibilities piling up every day!!
What started as a harrowing experience after a few repetitive documents, now is an enthusiastic adventure I look forward to every morning. To become a prodigy of the interior - learning how to master the skill and definition on the possible meaning of interiority and its influence to inhabitable spaces, as well as the influence to its inhabitants.
As to ensure quality content is shared - you need to know this will take time.
Please see Library and Glossary which will be updated as time allows.
May I leave you with this:
Would you consider, that the inside of your home or work, could influence how:
productive / happy/ serious/ at ease etc
you are when occupying it?
Does your home currently inspire healthy living -
and uplift your emotional state?
Or does it actually do the opposite due to LIFE's white noise?
(chores, cooking, work, sleep, and personal relationships.)
The first step to solving a problem, is by first identifying (knowing) there is one.
Should you have something to share of your own – do Say Hello!
Value above Cost.
Need above want and desire.
Find the balance.
This may seem to be a wonderful story - a nice attempt; but this is a serious matter to the heart. And to prove how serious - to become a prodigy of interiority - seemed an appropriate analogy in comparison to the drive behind this.
To have identified a life's ambition - felt quite exceptional - thus allowing both terms INTERIORITY and PRODIGY to be valuable candidates for a name.
Prodigy of Interiority
Had you ever written so much in such a short period of time, that your hand started cramping? Did you keep writing in fury or did you steer away into another activity to give your hand a rest?
Time is not on my side, my Friend.
I have a lot I want to talk to you about - and it has been difficult transforming the right words into interesting paragraphs, for you to want to return with a question of your own.
I try to write every single day - until I am certain I understand everything that I had bottled up, or had a concern about, or found interesting for the day; even all the relevant emotions experienced. I do this to understand the experience and connotation to that particular scenario in further detail. This allows me to formulate objectified commentary as an observer to truths vs. personal opinions alone.
But with that? I had an Idea, with no name to call it by. I knew I wanted to write and talk about anything and everything related to Design - narrowing it down to principles to be applied within immediate contexts of viewers - as to effect change slowly but surely within the learning environment of our profession; but also to inspire innovation for a more creatively sustainable future and quality living.
Prior to rushing towards the glorious mountain of [new] knowledge, I'd placed heavy thought into what this could stand for :
One of my dreams, is to have [interior] spaces be valued more by those who inhabit them. And, I want all relevant design elements to encourage the well being of its users, and encourage them to experience new ways of quality living.
Within my first journal, my opening line instructs me to remember the following :
" To be one of the greatest in the world, one must first learn how to become greate and in turn, make a difference."
To eliminate feeling overwhelmed by the mere possibilities of the concept - a decision was made to clearly identify what I'd love to achieve with this platform.
A generic, 'quick' description could be explained as the "atmosphere"; or the "vibe" you get from perceiving a space with the senses.
A young person with exceptional qualities or abilities.
It is incredibly fascinating how any space can influence any inhabitant in numerous different ways; without them consciously noticing the experience. As well as, how this user in turn, can allow their experience to live on in memory within such spaces.
The hope; or rather the vision - is to be able to curate such influencial interiors (or rather any space inhabited intimately by a user) - for the better well-being of their existence.
Soft furnishings such as - textures, colour combinations, ironmongery, spaceplanning etc. - in isolation mean little to me. The littlest detail is JUST AS IMPORTANT as the greater whole - thus, notioning to the finer coordination between creative professionals - to inspire innovative and inspiring design.
Remove the barrier which forces you to consider your influence in isolation.
A bit of word play, with letters scrambled here and there :

This name holds promise, for a better tomorrow - should it become a priority for YOU...
